How to Make an Advent Calendar (that's a Spice Rack, too!)

Whether it's for the kids or that special cook in your life, our homemade Advent Calendar will be a big hit.  After the holidays, convert it into a magnetic spice rack.

Supplies Needed:
  • A metal board that will
    • attract magnets
    • has pre-drilled holes for hanging the Advent Calendar (We used a 12" x 18" Versa-Board™
  • Christmas Wrapping Paper (large enough to fit the metal board, plus 1" on each side
  • Scotch Tape
  • Ribbon or Decorative Cord for hanging the Advent Calendar
  • 24 Magnetic Spice Tins (we used our Advent Calendar Set)
  • Advent Calendar Labels
  • Spice Labels (optional, if you wish to have the Advent Calendar become a Magnetic Spice Rack after the holidays)

Step 1 Decorate Metal Board -  Place the good side of the metal board onto the wrong side of a piece of Christmas wrapping paper which is at least 14" x 20"

Fold the long sides to the back of the metal board and use scotch tape to fasten the paper snuggly.

At the ends, fold the corners toward the middle of the board edge (like wrapping a gift) and tape edges securely.

Step 2 Attaching Hanging Ribbon -  We used a 1" wide piece of woven ribbon.  Take a sewing pin, nail, or screw and find the pre-drilled holes in the two top corners of the Advent Calendar.  Poke around the backside so you don't damage the wrapping paper.

Push one end of the cord or ribbon through the pre-drilled hole from front to back.  Do the same for each of the two hanging holes.

Pull the two ends in the back and tie them securely to complete the hanger

Step 3
Arrange Tins -  Before putting the Advent labels on the Tins, decide how you want to arrange the tins on the Advent Calendar.

Perhaps you want to put them in neat rows, by size

or

Perhaps you want to create a random arrangement as we did

Step 4
Apply Advent Calendar Labels -  We had a hard time choosing which of the Advent Labels sets to use--one with great pictures for kids or the simple numbers. We've used Holiday Red with Whimsical numbers.
