Spice Tin Dimensions & Volume

How much does each tin hold?

Versa-Tin® spice tins are sized by volume.  Spices are sold by their Net Weight.  These two measurements are very different and do not relate to each other.

Example:  The bottle shown to the right is a 1.4 oz. bottle of Poultry Seasoning.  Beside it is a 2 oz. Applause spice tin.  It is obvious that the contents of the bottle will not fit in the tin.  So 1.4 oz. in weight does not correlate to 2 oz. of volume.

So how do I figure out what size tins I need?

Pour the contents of one of your full grocery store spice bottles into a dry measuring cup.  If it is a typical 4 - 4-1/4" grocery store bottle (like the one in the picture above) its contents will between 1/2 and 3/4 cup, depending on the brand.  Some brands will all fit in a 4 oz; some won't.  Our 6 oz. tins hold approximately 3/4 cup--the perfect size for pouring an entire grocery store bottle (no matter the brand) into it.

If you purchase your spices in small amounts at a health food store or a grocery store with bulk spices or get refills from your favorite online Spice Vendors, then 2 oz. and 4 oz. tins may be just right for your needs. But again, figure out how much of a cup you normally keep on hand and use the table below to help determine what's right for your kitchen!
